What happened
The 2026 Golden Autumn Consumption Season, part of the China Farmers' Harvest Festival, began with a three-day launch event in Shanghai from September 4 to 6. Under the theme 'Harvest opens new prospects, hard work promotes revitalization,' the season will run from September through the end of November.
An AI-driven consumption zone at the venue allowed shoppers to describe preferences, budget or gift-giving needs and receive personalized farm-product recommendations. Organizers also released Harvest Map 1.0, a digital platform led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' big data development center. The map aggregates festival and agricultural-resource data from 2018 onward and has four sections - harvest villages, harvest tours, harvest collections and harvest good products - letting users search nationwide celebrations, rural tourism routes and quality produce from their mobile devices.
Businesses and local governments brought additional support. Six e-commerce platforms announced 17 measures spanning consumption subsidies, traffic support and merchant onboarding, while nine financial institutions rolled out 28 measures including discounts, credit-enhancement and farmer-friendly services. Shanghai released 53 suburban rural tourism routes and 42 brand activities. On the cultural stage, audiences saw the Jingpo people's Munao Zongge dance, the Inner Mongolia long tune, Fengxian rolling lanterns and Sanlin lion dances. A harvest-themed painting by Jinshan farmers was also presented to the China Agricultural Museum for permanent collection.
Why it matters
The launch illustrates how digital technology is becoming a bridge between farm products and consumers. AI recommendation tools and a centralized harvest map could make it easier for people to find specialty goods and rural destinations, potentially expanding market access for farmers.
By weaving performances and intangible cultural heritage into a shopping event, the season shifts the focus from simply buying products to experiencing rural culture. That approach may help sustain interest throughout the multi-month event and strengthen ties between urban consumers and farming communities.
