What happened
The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that a new round of strategic prospecting action has achieved another landmark result, with a major breakthrough in copper-gold exploration at the Chating area in Xuancheng, Anhui Province. The discovery is expected to underpin a new large-scale copper-gold resource base in East China and is strategically important to China's supply security for these metals.
The Chating deposit lies in the Nanling-Xuancheng copper-gold ore concentration area of the middle-lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt, within the Yangtze River Delta hinterland. It is a newly identified concealed porphyry copper-gold deposit with ultra-large potential in a volcanic-rock-covered region. The main ore body is about 1.2 km long and 1.1 km wide, with a maximum apparent drilled thickness of 1,371 meters.
Preliminary estimates place copper potential resources above the scale of several large copper mines, and gold potential resources above the scale of more than ten large gold mines. The deep ore body has not been fully revealed, and resource reserves have considerable room to grow.
Why it matters
The discovery strengthens China's domestic supply prospects for copper and gold, two metals critical for industry and national security. Locating such a resource in the Yangtze River Delta region could reduce logistical costs and import dependence.
Because the deposit remains open at depth and includes recoverable silver and sulfur byproducts, it may evolve into a major integrated production hub that supports both metal supply and regional economic growth.
Key facts
Exploration at the Chating copper-gold deposit in Xuancheng, Anhui, achieved a major breakthrough under China's new round of strategic prospecting action.
The Chating deposit is a concealed porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the Nanling-Xuancheng ore concentration area of the middle-lower Yangtze River metallogenic belt.
Preliminary estimates indicate copper potential resources exceeding several large copper mines and gold potential resources exceeding more than ten large gold mines.
What to watch next
The deep ore body is not yet fully uncovered, and authorities indicate resource reserves still have significant upside, so additional drilling could expand the project's scale.
The Ministry of Natural Resources will continue to deepen the central-local-enterprise linkage mechanism to promote strategic mineral exploration, development, and reserve increases, which may accelerate the Chating deposit's path to becoming an ultra-large copper-gold production base in East China.
