What happened

China's logistics sector showed stronger expansion momentum in August, with the logistics prosperity index rising 0.5 percentage points from the previous month to 50.9%, according to data from the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing.

Most major sub-indicators improved, including business volume, new orders, inventory turnover, capital turnover, equipment utilization, service prices, employment and business activity expectations. The business volume index stood at 50.9%, remaining in expansion territory for a fourth consecutive month, while the new orders index reached 50.8%, rising for a sixth straight month.

Railway, road, aviation, postal express and multimodal transport business volume indexes all stayed in expansion. Officials noted stronger demand in industrial sectors such as electrical machinery, pharmaceuticals, autos and electronic components, while consumer logistics was boosted by home upgrades and back-to-school purchases.

Why it matters

The August figures suggest logistics demand is broadening across both industrial and consumer segments, not relying on a single driver. E-commerce orders in smart learning, specialty cultural goods and sports/culture/education categories rose by more than 10% month over month, reflecting shifting but lively consumption spending.

Policy support may reinforce this trend. A recently issued logistics network construction plan by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport focuses on logistics hubs and connectivity, and officials expect follow-up measures to lift total logistics demand, support high-quality supply and improve the overall supply-demand environment.

Key facts

The August logistics prosperity index was 50.9%, up 0.5 percentage points month over month.

The business volume index stayed in expansion for four consecutive months; the new orders index improved for six straight months to 50.8%.

Railway, road, aviation, postal express and multimodal transport remained in expansion.

Officials cited rising logistics demand from electrical machinery, pharmaceutical, auto and electronic component manufacturing, plus strong consumer-related e-commerce orders.

What to watch next

Whether the expansion in logistics activity can be sustained in the coming months as sub-indexes for business volume and new orders remain in positive territory.

Further rollout of the 'six networks' implementation plans, which officials say could reinforce logistics demand and bring structural improvements to supply and market conditions.
