In contrast, the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index fell 0.81%, with declines in JD.com, Pinduoduo and NetEase outweighing gains in Baidu, Li Auto and Bilibili.

WTI crude oil added 0.73% to $91.67 a barrel. COMEX gold rose 2.39% to $4,520.3 per ounce, while spot gold gained 1.94%. COMEX silver advanced 3.24% and spot silver was up 2.51%.

Why it matters

Today's session shows unusually broad strength: riskier assets like tech and crypto names rallied alongside safe-haven gold and silver. That pattern can emerge when investors anticipate a more dovish Federal Reserve. In the summary, Fed Governor Waller said he would lean toward holding rates if upcoming inflation data confirm cooling price pressures, an important cue for markets.

The notable gain in precious metals could also reflect deeper concerns. The summary reports that the Dutch central bank moved 86 tons of gold from New York and Ottawa to London and mentions experts pointing to a trust crisis in the dollar system. At the same time, the widening US trade deficit may add macro uncertainty.

What to watch next

Investors will watch US inflation data before the Fed’s next meeting. August inflation numbers, as Waller noted, will largely determine whether the central bank keeps its policy rate unchanged.

Geopolitical and trade signals could be important: positive statements from Russia and Ukraine on peace prospects and Canada’s openness to a mutually beneficial deal with the US may shift sentiment in oil, wheat and cross-border trade.

Product and policy announcements in the tech sector, including OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra launch and Nvidia’s plans to ship its RTX Spark devices in October, may keep attention on AI-related shares.
