What happened

The three major U.S. stock indexes closed lower on September 4. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 271.86 points, or 0.51%, to 53,414.25. The S&P 500 lost 29.11 points, or 0.38%, to 7,718.60. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 77.07 points, or 0.29%, to 26,506.99.

Among the 'Magnificent Seven,' Meta rose 1.00% and Nvidia gained 0.84%, while Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Apple and Tesla all fell. Tesla dropped 5.92% after an update on its Cybercab did not meet expectations. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index nonetheless climbed more than 3%.

Storage and optical communication stocks led the gains. SanDisk jumped more than 11%, SK Hynix rose more than 8%, Seagate and Micron each gained more than 6%, and Western Digital was up more than 5%. Marvell added more than 7%, Coherent rose more than 6%, Corning advanced more than 5%, and Lumentum gained 4%. European benchmarks were mixed, while the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index rose 0.89%.

Why it matters

The session showed a notable split between the falling major indexes and strong semiconductor-adjacent stocks. That suggests investors may be rotating within technology toward memory and optical names rather than abandoning the sector.

Tesla's sharp decline after the Cybercab update underscores how vulnerable high-expectation stocks are to incremental product disappointments, and it could weigh on sentiment toward related auto-tech themes.

The broader cautious tone came alongside a reported August nonfarm payrolls figure of 162,000, which was well above expectations and led traders to increase bets on a Fed rate move in September. If strong jobs data keeps monetary policy tight, it may limit the upside for rate-sensitive growth stocks.

What to watch next

Investors may watch whether the rally in storage and optical communication stocks can continue even if the broader market stays soft.

Fed policy expectations will be in focus after the stronger-than-expected payrolls number and the reported uptick in September rate-hike bets.

Tesla-related headlines could remain a catalyst, as the Cybercab update disappointed and product clarity may be needed to restore confidence.
